Yes, they are very high maintenance! We had thought about keeping ours rather than turning him over to the rehabber, but once I saw how much work she had to put into him, I was glad we had let an expert take care of it. She basically had to take him with her 24/7 everywhere...to the grocery store, to work, everywhere. She said I was welcome to come visit him anytime, and that worked out pretty well for me.

If you decide to keep him, I know it's really important that you get the right milk replacement stuff. Everything I've read says that Esbilac is the stuff that most closely matches squirrel milk. It's a puppy replacement formula, and it's a little more spendy I think. But if you feed them the wrong stuff they will put on weight for a few days and then suddenly get really sick because their bodies can't process everything that's in the formula if it doesn't match what they need. You should be able to get Esbilac at any good pet store. Also, they can't defecate by themselves when they are young. Their mothers would lick them after every meal if they were in the wild. The rehabber would wet a little cotton ball and use that to wipe their bellies and genitals after every meal. That stimulates them to move along whatever needs moving along.

But that's basically all I know. I would definitely vote for getting in touch with your local rehabber. And it probably bears mentioning that it's illegal in most states to have a baby squirrel without a permit. That wouldn't necessarily deter me from doing it, but I think it's always a good idea to at least *know* when you're breaking the law. If you want to let me know where you are, I'd be happy to ask my rehabber friend for a referral to someone near you. Good luck!

Wow - I thought i was the only one with a baby grey squirrel... Found mine a couple days ago - neighbor brought him over after his dog found it. Have been feeding him 1 tablespoon kitten formula from tiny bottle every 2 hours. Man he is high maintenance! Maybe we will try to return him to nest. If that does not work; he is going to wildlife rehab! Let me know if you have any suggestions. He took to the bottle readily and is gaining weight!
