Knit Hat

I learned a lot from my first hat. Here’s my second completed hat.

Preston: Wow! That’s awesome. You could sell that for, like $18.50.
Me: Hmmm, that comes out to about…a dollar an hour. Maybe I’ll keep it.

While Preston’s mom was here visiting, she bought me the pattern and supplies to try my first pair of socks. This was my whole goal in learning to knit, so I’m a little worried that if I master the socks I’ll lose interest in the whole thing. But I hope that I keep making socks. The pattern is for “toe up” socks, so you start at the toe instead of at the top. This way you can try them on as you go to make sure they fit exactly right.

Ooohhh….I really want to learn to knit socks! Will you teach me??

Sure, but you have to learn to knit first. I hear you’re supposed to start with a potholder…or of course, you could try making a Perfect Thing, like I did :) So far, the only tricky thing about making the socks so far is the very first step, after that it’s pretty basic knitting in the round. Except that I haven’t got to the heel yet, and that looks pretty complicated. So far I have what Kathy calls “toe warmers” :) I’ll let you know how it goes once I have them finished.

My grandmother taught me to knit when I was 8. I made lots of slippers during one of my unfortunate incarcerations as a juvenille. :-p Some nice social worker religious type lady came and showed a few of us who were interested. I only know how to knit and pearl.

[…] Quite a while ago (6 months ago?), Kathy came to visit, and she bought us both some sock yarn and patterns for making toe-up socks. I had previously only made a couple hats. I tell you about my relative inexperience in order to justify the sad state of the socks to come. The first sock actually came along pretty well. I followed the instructions in Janet Rehfeldt’s “Toe-Up Techniques for Hand Knit Socks”. The book is brilliant and it helped me to understand how the sock gets shaped to a foot as you go. The fact that things did not turn out as planned has nothing to do with her instructions and everything to do with my inattention to them. […]
