Self Portrait Challenge
I’m so happy with these self-portraits that I’m posting them a couple days early. I was a bit trepidatious about the black-and-white theme this month, since I haven’t done much with black and white. But it turns out that I’m really enjoying it. Preston and I spent Saturday at the beach and I snapped these while he was out surfing.

More black and white self portraits…

i love the first shot! it took me a second glance to see you!

Thanks Nicole! I really like that first one too. it was really fun setting the timer on my camera and then running around all the driftwood to try to get in that spot before that picture took. I had to try it several times, and it could have been frustrating, but it felt like playing on the beach.

Oh, wow, so beautiful… reminds me of when I visited Long Beach up near Tofino on Vancouver Island… are you anywhere near there?
February 13th, 2007 at 3:03 pm
Hi Waspgoddess,
I suppose I’m near there, though it probably depends on your perspective. These pictures were taken at Westport, which is about in the middle of the Washington State coast. We’re the next well-known surfing spot south of Tofino. Folks from B.C. sometimes drive to Westport, and sometimes to Tofino to surf. Unless, of course, they know of their own private little surfing spot somewhere between the two. But I’m not telling about any of those

Great shots. they remind of that old metallica video-The Unforgiven. i love the first one best.

Intrepidflame, thanks for the compliment. I think I like the first one best also, although I do like my silly little smile in the second one. I had to go look up the Unforgiven video. I gerw up in such a small town that we didn’t have MTV during the days that I spent all of my time laying on the floor in my dark room listen to my Metallica tapes at high volume. It’s really interesting that these remind you of that video. If you feel like sharing, I’d love to hear more about that thought.
Emily, I love it that my pictures give you a visceral experience. I can’t remember the word for sure; is it synesthesia? When a visual stimulus gives you a olfactory experience, or when any of your other senses gets mixed up. It happens a lot when you’re on acid. If all my pictures did that, I’d be making a lot more money off them

Do you not surf?
February 15th, 2007 at 9:57 pm
I do not surf. It doesn’t look even slightly appealing to me. Like filling up your washer with sand and then sitting inside it for a cold water load. Preston seems to enjoy it very much; I enjoy walking on the beach. It works out well. No doubt, Preston would like to have himself a little Gidget sidekick, but it ain’t me.
p.s. When you leave a comment, where it says URI, you can enter your rustyspur web address. That will give you more inbound links to your site which means more visitors and possibly higher rankings in search engines.

Oh, very cool about the URI. I just had an assessment done and one of the suggestions was that I have more inbound links. Thanks!

I love the Washington coast AND these photos. The first one especially. I love the softness of the image in contrast with the hard driftwood.

Thanks Rachel! I love hearing about what things each different person likes about a photo. It seems like a different thing stands out to each person.
